Proposal: MAX PAIN by XCOPY
The 6529 Network Museum proposes to acquire one original MAX PAIN by XCOPY for the Museum's permanent collection through a collectively funded purchase by the voters supporting this proposal.
Each qualifying voter who votes in favour of the proposal commits to contributing an equal share of the final acquisition cost. Following a successful vote, the purchase cost will be divided equally among affirmative voters and contributions sent to a designated acquisition wallet.
Contributors receive no individual or fractional ownership interest in the acquired NFT. Rationale
MAX PAIN is a 2022 work by XCOPY, one of the defining artists of crypto art. Released through Nifty Gateway on 24 March 2022 as part of MAX PAIN AND FRENS, the work was offered as a ten-minute open edition at 1 ETH, with 7,394 editions sold.
XCOPY has minted blockchain-based art since 2018 and developed one of the most recognisable visual languages in the medium. His looping glitch aesthetic, distorted figures and recurring themes of death, technology, financial speculation and internet culture became closely associated with the emergence of Ethereum-native digital art.
MAX PAIN is particularly representative of this practice. Its title draws on the financial-market concept of āmax pain,ā while its imagery embodies the volatility, anxiety and risk that have long characterised both XCOPY's work and crypto culture. Its open-edition format also reflects an important period of experimentation with digital scarcity, distribution and blockchain provenance: thousands of collectors could own an original edition of the same artwork while each token retained independently verifiable provenance on Ethereum.
The work has additional relevance to the 6529 Network Museum because XCOPY released his solo body of work under CC0. His stated approach is āPermissionless Artā: allowing anyone to use, remix, reproduce and build upon the imagery while the provenance of the original blockchain objects remains intact.
This closely aligns with the philosophy of the 6529 ecosystem. The Memes are also CC0, with permissionless use and remixing forming a foundational part of our approach to open NFT culture.
MAX PAIN therefore represents more than an important work by an important crypto artist. It sits at the intersection of crypto-art history, Ethereum-native provenance, open-edition experimentation and CC0 culture, principles central to the 6529 Network Museum and The Memes.
The collective acquisition mechanism extends that alignment to the acquisition itself. Rather than relying on a single donor, the community selecting the work will collectively fund its entry into the Museum, with the cost shared equally among those voting to acquire it.
